The brain behind the Seminar on call centers is an innovative company that
is all set to revolutionize the dynamics of this market in India. The name is
SM
Telesys Ltd. - a Delhi-based company which saw its turnover zoom to Rs 130 million last
fiscal from the previous years figure of Rs 60 million.
In its earlier avatar,
namely, SM Electronics and Services Ltd. it had given run for their money to paging
multinational companies like Motorola, Casio, and NEC. "Finally, these companies
could not compete with us, and, had to quietly make an exit from the Indian market",
explains companys founder and dynamic Managing Director, Dr. N.P. Sen.
CASIO & NEC companies
just failed to develop Indian language pager, adds Dr. Sen.
Dr. Sen has a wealth of
experience in the area of telecom services. In addition, he has an illustrious record an
effective and successful administrator of large telecom projects. Among his significant
senior assignments are those as Director of Telecommunications consultants India Ltd. and
Managing Director of ITI, Mankapur.
The company pioneered the
manufacture of pagers in Indian languages. Its own R&D backed up with the timely
support from the Ministry of Science & Technology, enabled it to successfully come out
with low-cost pagers from its state-of-the art SMT factory in RIICO Industrial Area,
Bhiwadi, Rajasthan. Its current production capacity of 40,000 pager per annum can be
expanded.
Today, SM Telesys
boosts of
an admirable 80% market share of the pagers supplied to the OEMs in the Indian market.
Whether it is BPL, RPG, Mobilink, Pagepoint, Pagelink, or NICE, their one-point source for
affordable language pagers is SM Telesys Ltd. SMT is supported by some of the major
financial institutions such as IFCI-VCF, SBBJ & RIICO.
No wonder, the company is a
darling of its shareholders who were rewarded with a maiden dividend of 12% last fiscal.
In recognition of its contribution to the Indian industry and society at large, the
Institute of Economic Studies, New Delhi presented its prestigious Award of Udyog Rattan
and Excellence Award to M/s SM Telesys Ltd. in August this year.
Sensing the golden
opportunity, SM Telesys is diversifying into IT and IT-enabled services.
First, it established a
software Division for web-design business and GIS Solutions. Second, it launched a
portal named, giftstoindia.com. Already functional, this user friendly portal
allows you to send a gifts to your friends located in prominent places in India. This
service has proved very popular in NRIs. Logistics are facilitated through
companys own offices in 25 cities and towns.
Another area of
diversification, where the company is aggressively focused is the launch of its call
center business operations. For this, it joined hands with reputed US companies who are
keen to make use of Indias factor advantages. It has an innovative blueprint through
which it will promote other entrepreneurs to set up call centers providing jobs and
services which otherwise would have gone to developed countries. "This phenomenon
that will shift job opportunities to India is of an entire new dimension, never
witnessed in the mankinds history", contends Dr. Sen.
Besides these ambitious
plans for diversification, SM Telesys currently provides paging services under the brand
name NICE in three states and two cities, with a growing subscriber-base of 20,000.
